Dragon Tongue

Dragon Tongue

I thought it would be fun to add some color to the bean patch this year, so I planted these Dragon Tongue beans. They are an old Dutch bean and yield pretty good. The only thing that is disappointing is that they turn into a plain old yellow wax bean when you cook them. Got to eat them raw to enjoy the color.

Those are beautiful! But, I don’t like to eat wax beans… ;-)

I used to grow “Trionpho Violetto” (I think was the name…). It was a pole bean. It was a lovely dark purple that turned green when it was cooked.

I thought about trying out some of those as well. Bummer they don’t retain the color.

    For the record……

These beans taste real good raw. They are awful cooked, just awful beans. I’ve been canning some and hadn’t eaten any cooked yet when I wrote this. We had some for dinner the other night and they were not very good at all. There are much better wax beans out there, Cherokee Wax is a favorite. I’m letting the rest dry out for dry beans. That was the original plan anyway until the deer ate so many Blue Lakes this year.

We planted some of those last year. They were some of the best tasting beans I’ve ever had.

Thanks for the report, Nick. I always say that every year is different, every garden different and no one should ever expect the same results(good or bad) as the next guy. I’ll plant a row next year in a better spot and see if they are any better. This years harvest was did not impress me.
