If I only had more land……
A common complaint by those who want to dive into agrarianism is that they just don’t have enough land. They sit and dream, they dream and grumble. How much land do I need? That is the ever asked question these days. As Salatin wisely asked, “What are you doing with what you have now?” Be a good steward with what you have before you grumble that you need more. Chris Ortiz at the Chalcedon Blog posted a You Tube video of the folks at Path to Freedom. I had heard of them and years ago they used to link to this blog. I hadn’t been to their new site until today. These folks are not Christian Agrarians but they are a good example of doing what you can with what you’ve got. Check out this Link to see what they have done with 1/10th of an acre. I think everyone will be challenged to see that we all could do more with what we have. It also shows what weird times we live in. The Old Left and Old Right have found a common enemy, globalization and industrialism. We must be aware that we are coming to some of the same conclusions from completely different presuppositions. It is however, interesting to watch happen.

Also, google biointensive gardening (GROW BIOINTENSIVE). You will come up with much from John Jeavons. It is much of his work that the folks over at Path to Freedom use. Also, I think Floyd Tuberville has a link on his site to Spin Farming. It’s basically the same, except that the Spin Farming spin, I think is that they make their living from “showing” you “how to” (kind of like Joel Salatin). With some internet time, book reading and trial and error, you can do it without buying into pre-packaged “how to’s”. Also, the Dervaes (Path to Freedom) are very willing to help you out. Specifically look for “How to Grow More Vegetables” by Mr. Jeavons. Be sure to get the latest version. It has been enormously helpfull in our backyard “experimental” garden.
Luke 16:10 (NKJV) He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.
Hope this helps…

Scott,
We often find ourselves dreaming and grumbling, and then are reminded that “he who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much” (thanks Matt!) If we are not using our 5+ acres now, who says we would be using 15 or 20? Really, let us maximize what God has given to us right now and see how we stewardship, then move on (maybe, if needed)
Thanks for the reminder and the links. I plan to check them out tonight. Off to build a guinea brooder

Mr. Davis, I purchased “How to Grow More Vegetables” upon your recommendation, sir. Thanks for the tip! Here’s a direct link for anyone else wanting to purchase the book.
We’ve got plenty of room for improving our stewardship of the little piece of land that we have.

Hi Matt
Thanks for the extra info.

Good to hear from you guys! After seeing the clip I felt very ashamed, if those folks had all the land I have access to they could feed the whole county:)

Thanks for the link. You’ll have to tell me about the book after you read it. My book budget is down to $0 for a while. I finally decided it would be a while before I could justify buying Days of Vengence (Chilton’s commentary on Revelation) so I broke down and downloaded the free copy from ICE. I don’t know if I can make it through 750 pages of PDF though:) Nothing beats a book in the hand. I am thankful they offer it for free though.
