That Durn TV

One night, some time back, Leah and the kids and I went up on the other hill to visit a couple of elderly saints. When I knocked on the door I could hear the TV was turned up really loud, so I knocked a little harder. They poped out of the ole TV trance, turned it off and opened the door. They invited us in and we sat and chatted for a few hours. The subject of how crazy and wicked our culture has become came up and the old feller’s responce was interesting. “Its that durn TV!” he said. “Thats the problem.” I couldn’t help but remember that just a few minutes ago they both were watching one. I thought it odd how someone could tell that that the TV was “a problem” but still have one and use it. Then I thought back to my TV days and how I justified having an idoit box at my house. We got rid of the beast gradually. First we tore off the antenna and only watched VCR tapes. Then we put it in the closet and only got it out once and a while. Then it broke. At that time we swore to never have another one on the place. We threw it out and that was that. Oh, what a wonderfull choice we made. Becouse we “bit the bullet” and chose not to own a TV our family life is so much richer. Reading time is what my boys look forward to every night. No CFR dominated “news” and no advertising with half naked people trying to sell me something I don’t want or need. I share this story to encourage those of you who have thought about trashing the TV and haven’t done it yet. Take it out and smash it with a sledge hammer, fire a few deer slugs into it, it is one of the liberating feelings you will ever have. Sever yourself from the madness and never turn back!

When I got saved 6 years ago God showed me not to watch t.v I eventually got rid of all the stations and watched lots of Christian videos instead. I got married to a Christian man who would be addicted to tv so he hadn’t had one for years, Incidentally he is the local tv man!! Lately, I have realised that we are watching too many movies at home and we are concerned that we have given up our first love..Loving and obeying God and what He has shown us. We are just back from a holiday and plan to sit down and talk the whole thing through again… Please pray for us?
