Let Him Sing Psalms

In the 5th chapter of the book of James we read, “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms”. So, are ya cheerful, and if so have you ever sang a psalm? Most american christians will answer that they have never sang a psalm. No, pulling three lines out of a psalm and turning into a “praise song” doesen’t count. I’m talking about singing from God’s song book. The only inspired songs you’ll ever sing, free from doctrinal error and the fancy of mens imaginations. Did you know that until the last hundred years or so almost all churches sang psalms? Why don’t more churches sing psalms? I’m not sure, I’ve talked to many pastors and laypeople from all sorts of non psalm singing churches and they never have an answer. Most tell me how much they love hymms but never give a good reason as to why they don’t sing any psalms. I believe that one of the reasons that the modern church does not understand they Lordship of Christ is from a lack of psalm singing. The reason they have such a wimpy feminine veiw of God also come from a lack of psalm singing. When’s the last time you sang a hymm that talked about God smashing the teeth of the wicked or breaking their jawbones? When’s the last time you sang a “praise song” that talked about trampeling our foes and calling sinners to repentance? Though your church might never take up singing from the psalter, there is no reason you can’t do at home as family. I encourage you to give it try.

Greetings! Is there somewhere I can listen to Psalm singing online or on CD? I don’t think I’ve ever heard this before, and you are correct, our hymn book is filled with songs that are doctrinally off. Thanks!

    Hi Beverly

This website has psalters and cds for sale. They also have some psalms that can be downloaded for free. We use The Book of Psalms for Singing, which is available there.

We belong to a Psalm singing church and love it. My husband always says “If I have a problem with the words, then I know it is MY problem.” It is nice to have such comfort, instruction, and doctrinal purity in our worship.

Kim, a lurker coming out lurkdom

Thanks Scott, After I posted my request I googled around and found crown and covenant and was able to listen to some of the samples. I especially liked Jason Coghill’s CD’s. Think I might have to order them!! I had no idea that there were so many songs from the Psalms.

I just discovered you and your wife’s blogs, and have been encouraged. Your wife is a beautiful lady! I loved the pics of her with her homemade apron. I’m an apron wearer also!! Thanks.

    Hi Kim

Glad you “came out” of lurkdom :) I was on your blog and noticed you belong to a RPCNA church too. We belong to Crown and Covenant RPC in Owego NY. That pretty much makes us “kinfolk”, now don’t it.

I’m glad that I was able to introduce you to Psalm singing! I know you will enjoy and be edified by them. Blessings to you, and thank you for the kind words.

    Scott,

How funny. Two homesteading RPCNA’ers with blogs. I’ve definitely got to start reading your archives now.

And yes, “kinfolk” would be a good word to describe it. A small close-knit group of people. We love it.
