Fall is Approaching
It seems fall is fast approaching here in the hill country. The goldenrod is in full bloom and the leaves on the trees are already starting to change in some spots. The garden looks like it always dose this time of year, weedy. The seed garlic sits on the counter, meaning I’ve got some tilling to do and some compost to draw. The first fire wood logs have been pulled out and sit waiting to be cut, split and stacked. I love to watch the wood pile grow in size. Someday, Lord willing, I’ll get enough done up in the fall that I won’t be digging and scounging around in snow up to my gizzard. Someday, its never happened before. We have had a good shot of rain here this week. We needed it, pastures were looking kind of dry. We can now continue grazing the herd, hopefully untill the snow starts. Oh, you never know, depends on what kind of frost we get and when. We had to feed a little 2nd cut hay to the milk cows this last week, the first we’ve had to feed all summer. The turkeys are starting to bunch up a little more. They are starting to forage down closer to the farm, just like every other year this time. Deer have started to change over toward the fall travel routes a little at a time as well. The bucks are still in velvet, and we’ve seen a few big ones. I’m not a horn hunter myself, I always tell the kids “you can’t eat the horns”. Give me a tender yearling doe any day, just like veal. Time to start thinking about dipping the traps and planning out what kind of trap line we’re going to run. I’m not sure how crazy I’m going to go this year. Probably spend a little more time deer hunting, I’ve got a hankerin’ for some venison. The winter beef will be killed soon and its a good thing, the freezer is looking bare. I like fall, the woods are pretty and the chill in the air puts a spring back in your step.

I agree with that last sentence. I can certainly feel a spring in my step when it starts to cool off. Also, yesterday, I noticed the bird calls again. They are raucous in the spring, but when it gets hot, they disappear. They have returned and it is glorious.
Love your blog.
