Hi Jeff

I don't remember him mentioning it. His consern is over what type of lime you use. He claims if you use natural limestone that you can't use to much. You have to make sure that the magn/cal ratios are right. Most "garden store" lime in a bag would probably not be good to use at high rates becouse either the ratios are off or they are caustic. Real fine ground limestone is what he suggests. I'm still trying to locate some and if I do we will be experimenting with it this year.

Scott, Does Mr. Lange discuss whether, in applying so much lime, there is a danger of an over basic pH?

Marci

Thats neat, he seems like that kind of guy. Get the book, next best thing to being his neighbor :) I got my copy for Christmas and read it all in 2 sittings.

Deb

Cumberland Books is a great place to shop, be sure to ask for a catolog. Rick puts a lot work and thought into it, its a good read in and of its self. We had a dusting of snow the day after Christmas and thats been about it. Crazy weather out here. It was 55 today and its going to be in the 50s all week. If the rain would hold off I could do some fall tilling in January! I'm still trapping beavers in open water and the cows are spending days outside. After reading The Long Winter with the boys, I was ready for a hard one but not complaining that its still "summer in January".

Thanks, Scott. This book sounds great! Thanks, too, for the link to Cumberland Books. I think I'll order it from them. We still have quite a bit of snow in our garden from the two recent snowstorms, but I'm itching to see what I can begin to do now to prepare for the spring.

Sounds like a good book to read. I have good friends that just moved down there by Jerome. He has already visited them and is helping them. I will look into getting this book to read. Thanks!!

Hi Deb

Yes he does, in fact thats why I think its so valuable. He offers some workable solutions to loosening heavy soils, solutions, that the more I think about them, the the more sense they make. The heavy lime applications are more for soil loosening than for changing ph. This book is most useful to those of us who have heavy, hard soils.

This book sounds quite fascinating. When discussing soil amendment, does Lange address what to do with soil that has a heavy clay content (which is our problem)?
