Keeping Busy

I’ve kept pretty busy the last few days. Today we raked and baled 30 acres of hay. We have more down thats not ready, and rain in the forcast…oh well. One of Elsie’s daughters freshened today with a big bull calf. I’ll casterate him and decide latter wether to eat him or make an ox out of him. The pastures are all opened up becouse the grass is short. We let them scrounge were they want instead of force feeding them one padock in these situations. So, I had to search over 100 acres of hillside, tops, and vales to find her and the little one. I had to carry him part way home, couse he was getting tired. I started firewood yesterday. Splitin’ and stackin’ up hickory right now. I love hickory, the coals last a long time. I ussually only pull out stuff I can split by hand, but it looks like I’ll have to borrow the inlaws wood splitter for some it this year. A fellow down the road that has a 3 point hitch log winch offered to pull some logs for me this year. Its much faster than getting a couple at a time with the workmaster so I’m having him do it. One old hickory he brought up is nearly 3.5 ft in diameter, a bit much for hand wackin’. It feels good to get an early start on the firewood. I should be out picking broccoli right now. I already have enough that needs picking that I should get some in the freezer. Lots of work, so little time. Last night I finished up splitin’ wood and came in the house and it was already 9:30, time flies in the summer. As soon as we get another break in the weather we need to get some more hay nocked down. We picked up an extra 30 acre lot and another 15 acres down the road for this year. It can all be certifed with our place, since it hasn’t had anything done to it in 3 years….these peices its more like 30 years:) Buddy, the dog, and I went out scouting for berries a few nights ago. Looks like a record crop this year! I love blackcaps, black berries and raspberries. Little John still can’t get over the concept of jam. He is always so happy to eat his blackcaps on toast in the winter. He’s always telling folks how we “squash ‘em up and stick ‘em in jars….so we can have blackcaps in the winter!!!”
