The Lonely Homesteader
Leah and the boys have been gone since Saterday and its getting pretty lonely on the hill. The silence is deafening. The funny thing is when I was younger, before my conversion, I wanted to be a hermit. I used to want to be hermit, can you believe that. Well, this week is reminding me of what foolish things the unbelieving think up.
My freind John Owen came over for a visit last night. Was I ever glad to see him. We sat out by the garden and enjoyed some fermented beverages and fellowship. We tossed around ideas and thoughts on community, unity and building christian culture. We discussed the sacraments, eschatology and any old thing we could think of. John has been cleaning out the book collection and he’s given me some of the “culls” Last night he brought me a few more. One of them is David Chilton’s Paradise Restored which the good pastor from Rayville recomended. I started it last night and it is very good.
I’m heading back to the barn. I should get a few a posts up, on things that I’ve been thinking about lately, tonight or the next. May God bless you and keep you safe. And remember, if the kids are driving you nuts today, you’d be a lot “nuttier” if they wasn’t there ![]()

Scott, may you be encouraged in your time alone. We do not know sometimes how much our family means to us until we spend time without them. Praise the Lord for good friends like John. I am about to undertake a rather lengthy time of seclusion myself, as my family flies to Peru to visit my wife’s family. I thank the Lord for the small, but faithful flock I pastor, who will step in to encourage me. I suspect a few late night catfishing forays will come to pass, I can’t wait.

I always have mixed feelings about finding great books at the used book store, or having a friend offer me one, like your friend John Owen (now that’s a name!). I always wonder why someone would give up treasures like these. . . but then I get over it and grab the book! And I agree with the Rev about David Chilton’s book, I read it years ago and I think it is still the best book available.
