The Hunt

Yesterday was a busy one. I did my ussuall everyday work(milking, feeding, chasing, barn chores) and also got a little more tilling done. I got the black plastic down and put 50 tomatoe transplants in and some of the peppers. The first batch of bush beans are in as well as beets and and potatoes. Peas have been up for a while and and I’ve been snacking on spinich for a week or so. We have about 20 broccoli plants in so far and they are looking good too. Anyway, at the end of the day I was pooped. It was about 8pm when I finished up the tomatoes and was ready to pop the top on a cold beer and relax. Then the boys said they wanted to go huntin’. They had their little toy shotguns and were talking about the need to “put up some meat for winter”. They asked me to go along, so I went. They covered some ground, “shot” 2 bears, a buffalo and a deer. It was getting dark, so I suggested we head for the house. John said we needed to shoot one more critter if we wanted eat good this winter so I agreed to try for one more deer. We were working our way back to the house and went through the little orchard we have been reclaiming. They layed down in the tall grass and started crawling on their bellies. “Come on Dad” they wispered. I got down and started crawling with them, and not 2 feet in front of me I saw something. “Stop, don’t move” I wispered to the boys. “Is it a deer?” asked Johnny. “Yup, a little fawn”, I explained. Right there in the grass in front of us was a baby fawn all curled up in ball hiding were momma had left her. I told them they could sit down next to it but not to touch it. It just layed there like it was told and the boys watched it ever so close. We then got up and went over to tell mother. John burst in the door, “Mom, we found a baby fawn….its soooo sweet! It’s the neatest thing I never saw!” I told John it was “ever saw” but he said that he was correct becouse he had “never saw” one before. They took their mom out to see it. She snaped a few pictures of them sitting by it and we went back home. Just another “typical day in the country”, which makes “growin’ up country” all the more special.

That is a neat story! I hope to see pictures of that too! I can just see John saying all those things. He has such a great personality and I just love the things that come out of his mouth!

[…] Heres the boys and the fawn. Its the only picture we have and Noah started coughing just as we snaped it. It looks like he’s crying, but it was really coughing. Here is a link to The Story […]
