Reading, Not Writing….and Winter is Coming

You have probably noticed that I have not had much time to write on the old blog. There is a good reason, I have been spending an anormous amount of time reading to the boys. What little time we have left after being full time farmer/homesteaders has been spent exploring the wonderful book of Exodus with the little ones. My boys are just captivated by this book, so much so that they are constantly asking to pick up where we left off! Nothing shows the Power and Glory of the Triune God to little boys like swarms of frogs or the mass drowning of the wicked and their horses :) It is a shame that the Old Testement is so neglected in our time. I have always said that the New Testement never really made a lot of sence to me before I read the Old. In fact many churches today teach that the Old Testement is not even important to christians, and that is a lie. The Bible is one book and should be treated as such. We don’t read little cute “old testement story books” but rather the scriptures themselves. There is nothing in these books that a child cannot understand. Every question is an opportunity to teach, and if you don’t know the answer; tell them so. Spend time studing for the answer with them. Anyway, we are having a ball with Exodus. The other book we are reading as a family is the first in the Little House collection. The first one is Little House in the Big Woods and the kids can’t get enough of this either. Little John has plans to build a smoke house already! Other than reading we have been spending a lot of time in the garden. The first batch of baby chicks has arrived and are doing well. The cows are eating lots of grass and we are getting some of the hay equiptment readied up. Paperwork for organic certifaction is still going on as well. I was thinking this morning that winter really rules our lives in the north. I spend spring, summer and fall getting ready for winter. I spend the winter tring to survive. The trick is tring to take time to enjoy the blessings of the other seasons while preparing for one.

    Hi Scott,
Wow! I go out of town and you move…the new site looks great….I am just getting caught up reading everyone’s blog to see what I missed while I was out speaking…

I also love the Old Testament as do my boys - My 16 year olds favorite book is Judges! A wiser, older person once told me that the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

Blessings to you, Leah and the boys and baby!

    Scott,

I always love to hear about the little agrarians. And the big ones too! And, yes, Exodus is GREAT (as is Judges, TNFarmGirl. In fact, I think my little guy likes the stories of Ehud & Jael in Judges better than the Exodus stories). And, YES, the older part of the Book is foundational, and, YES, I wonder why we ignore it. (Perhaps the collection of essays edited by James Jordan, Failure of the American B…… Culture, would explain that.)

I could fullheartedly agree with your post … except … “There is nothing in these books that a child cannot understand.” Well, maybe 1 or 2 things somewhere. But your point is CERTAINLY well made.
